Bestselect at the Floraliën 2016
Last year Bestselect was still the supplier of innovative and disease-resistant at the World Expo in Milan. This spring Bestselect will again be prominently present at the Ghent Floraliën. We are currently building a demo garden on the Sint-Pietersplein with an assortment of strong, disease-resistant garden plants.
Scientific research
The Ghent Floralies establish the link between scientific research and the horticultural sector on Sint-Pietersplein, one of the four sites. Bestselect could not stay away from this!
Bestselect is a cooperative association of eighteen Flemish ornamental tree nursery companies. Bestselect's mission is to develop high-quality novelties within the range of the Flemish ornamental tree nursery and to jointly launch them on the market. The focus here is on resistant, sustainable cultivars with an attractive appearance that appeal to the consumer. For this purpose, Bestselect invests in various scientific research projects in the ornamental tree nursery, and collaborates with the Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research (IVLO) for this purpose.
Bestselect garden
The tree growers of Bestselect show part of their plant assortment in a garden of 110m². The garden design and realization is in the hands of Garden design and construction GroenTac from Maldegem. The design is based on the permanent design of the Floraliën on the Sint-Pietersplein. These garden areas will mainly be decorated with 4 new, flowering garden roses, impressive Malus Red Obelisk and the Ligustrum Green Century and Massif.
Malus Red Obelisk
At the stand, 120 ornamental apple trees will herald the spring in full force. This ornamental apple tree will surprise you all year round. In spring, Malus Red Obelisk will charm you with its lush, very large, pink blossoms and red-coloured budding leaves. In autumn, you can enjoy the masses of red fruits, which remain on the tree until well into winter. Of course, you can pick them and use them as decoration in your home or in a flower arrangement. This columnar tree does not grow taller than 5 m and remains about 2 m narrow. This makes it an ideal asset for smaller private gardens or for planting as an avenue tree.
Rose assortment
Bestselect shows more than 250 blooming roses at the Floraliën. The four newest cultivars are presented: the rose Nero, Arte, Monia and Phaedra.
Rosa 'Nero' is a low-growing, white cluster rose (30 to 50 cm) and is therefore particularly suitable for low borders. Rosa 'Arte' is a very striking, lavishly flowering cluster rose that provides an attractive eye-catcher in any border. The filled flowers are pink in colour, have a good repeat flowering and are very resistant to mildew. The plant grows up to 60 cm. The cluster rose Rosa 'Monia' has a special appearance with its double flowers. Each pink petal has a dark pink touch, which looks like a hand-painted brush stroke. Rosa 'Phaedra' is a tea hybrid with light pink, filled flowers that spread a light and pleasant scent.
Ligustrum Massif
The Ligustrum Massif is a strong, ground-covering Ligustrum. The plant does not grow high (no higher than 1m), and its flat growth fills the ground with a fresh green foliage. This Ligustrum Massif is ideal for filling in public plantings, wide borders, embankments, verges, etc. The gracefully overhanging branches ensure good and fast ground cover and suppress weed growth. The plant flowers in June and then forms purple-black fruits that remain on the plant long into the winter.
